Artist's Comments

This image stirred up a fair amount of drama. I've had my run-ins with the photography gestapo in the past, but never quite like this. I spent the better part of an hour flanked by two security guards threatening me with arrest, confiscation of my equipment, being turned over to various agencies and interrogated.

I know some people like to get in security guard faces and instigate things just for the sake of it, but I try to approach things differently. I'm usually respectful, calm, and talk with people rationally. However, when they demanded I turn over my camera; my eyebrows shot up in an arch and I had a few things to say about that idea. When pigs fly, basically, was my response. Emphatically!

They backed off a little bit and we went back to talking semi-rationally and finally came to an understanding. I asked them if I deleted the photos and agreed to go quietly, could we put this all behind us. They got on their radios, exchanged information with their masters, and eventually agreed as long as they got to watch me actually delete each and every picture I had taken of the place.

Some people would balk at that idea and refuse to delete anything. And that's fine, but I didn't see the point. All I wanted was my pictures and to be able to leave peacefully. It's not my fault the idiots don't know anything about digital media and how easy it is to recover "deleted" data.

So, I put on the show they wanted. I feigned disappointment and deleted each one. I eventually got back to my car and promptly removed the memory card from my camera to ensure I didn't overwrite the deleted data. When I got home, I recovered each and every last damn one of them!

It reminds me of the story of Br'er Rabbit and the Tar Baby... "Please don't make me delete my pictures Br'er Bear... anything but that!"

I got news for ya, you technologically ignorant, badge-heavy buffoon; I was born and raised in the digital brier patch!

Haha awesome story. I have had many friends run into such people. Maybe its a bad idea to try to make tripods look like sniper rifles :/
:iconaaronbee:
You know, I actually worry a little about that very thing. I'm out at night a lot and I often fear that my tripod looks like a weapon. All I need to run into is some trigger-happy, shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later idiot. =(

What exactly did they not want you to see or "expose"? Sounds fishy to me, but that may just be the conspiracy theorist side of me talking..(it's only a small side really)

Oh, it's the whole post-9/11 paranoia thing. They use it as their ostensible excuse when they really just wanna bully you. Show how much control and authority they believe they have over you.

Jokes on them. I'm smarter than your average Br'er Bear. What they thought was acquiescence and capitulation was actually calculated strategy and manipulation ;)
:iconso1rfan:
First off, awesome photo.

Second, I would have told them to f**koff, it's not against the law to take photos from a public place.

Do you carry the photographer's rights sheet with you?

If you weren't trespassing then they were in the wrong. The thing that gets me is why they wanted to take your camera. There was no reason for it unless they thought you had seen and snapped pics of something you or the rest of the general public aren't meant to see. Something potentially incriminating to the plant/refinery. (whatever it is) (I know "tinfoil hat on") It wouldn't surprise me

But then again it could just be a couple of bored security people who used their badges and position to do what they want and get away with it.

"tinfoil hat off"

Pseudo cops are always the worst. I didn't know you could recover deleted data. I deleted a photo I took of a guy in NYC playing chess in the park after he got in my face and accused me of treating him like a specimen in the zoo. :giggle: I wish I'd know about it then.

I've read it, but no, I don't carry it. I should. After this incident, I probably will.

I've never really had this kind of trouble before. I've been stopped more times than I can remember by cops and security asking me what I'm up to, but usually they just look at me a little strange and go on. I have had a few follow me around... kind of shadow me while I take pictures near their property, but never like this incident.

I hate to stereotype, but security and law enforcement is not the sort of job you "fall into". You don't take it up as a part-time gig while you are pursuing something else. You actually have to want it. You have to train for it. Consequently, a large portion of those who seek it out do so because they have power-trip, control personality issues. It's a cliche because it's true.

They just wanted to screw with me. It gives them a woody when they feel like they are forcing others to thimble and fear them and bow to their demands. The guy that was being the biggest turd, his favorite word was "compliance". He used it about 20 times. "621 to base... cancel request for the Highway Patrol... he's complying." Whatever. lol

Silly little man and his silly little issues.
